File Extension Flv

Embedded video files located on websites are often tagged with the .flv file extension. This extension applies to internet video files delivered to the web browser via Adobe's Flash Player. Similar to .swf video, the .flv format was proprietary at one point. It's been changed to an open format now even though the codecs used in it are still protected by patents. Additionally, Adobe has since come out with a new format and file extension, and had begun urging developers to begin moving in that direction. For now, the .flv format is still remains popular, with Google Video, Yahoo! Video, and YouTube are just three of the many internet sites that utilize these video files.

Regtask was able to clean up my computer and speed up the performance! I highly recommend it

Jo H.

My computer was always popping up with registry errors and I couldnt get rid of them. Regtask did the job for me and took less then 5 minutes to speed up my computer.

Samantha J.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

David G.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

The .flv file structure is a container consisting of a short header followed by interleaved audio, video, and metadata packets. The header identifies the file as .flv media and has four fields: signature, version, flags, and offset. Though streaming was never intended for flash video, it can be simulated to some degree by using a script which sends the header as normal, but then skips forward to another point and moves the timestamps. Flv4PHP is an open source tool that enables full streaming of .flv files through the use of PHP. The media can also be streamed via RTMP using the Flash Media Server or the open source Red5 server.

More Info Regarding File Extension Flv

The other methods of delivering Flash media are through standalone .flv files that are downloaded and played externally, by embedding it in a .swf file (the entire file must be downloaded before playing will begin), or progressive download via HTTP. The progressive download is essentially the same technology as the streaming "simulation" mentioned in the previous paragraph.

Users can view .flv files using just about any major media player software. Titles include VLC media player, MPlayer, Xine, and Totem (all available for Linux, Mac, and Windows), along with Windows only products like GOM Player, Applian FLV Player, Moyea Desktop Flash Player, Sothink Free FLV Player, Total Free FLV Player, and Wimpy Desktop FLV player. The files can also be viewed with web based players like BitGravity Player, Dash Media Player, Flowplayer embeddable video player, and FPlayer.

Conversion programs are available for creating your own .flv files, or for converting the .flv into another format. RivaFLVencoder is a free program that coverts to or from using ffmpeg. Other conversion tools are Wildform's FlixPro, Batch FLV Converter, and Sothink FLV Converter. FLV to MP3 Online Converter is a web based service offering FLV conversion. Users can upload the files directly or point the service to a URL. Users who decide to try this service should make sure to read the web site terms before beginning.

Errors when attempting to play .flv files are commonly tied to out-dated player software or codecs. A user may attempt to view a file online but when the .flv player comes up, it displays the icon rather than playing the media. In almost every case, simply updating the player software will solve the problem. For Linux users, this might be a bit more difficult depending on the distribution being used. Some distros will update the flash player via a package management system, while others may require downloading and building from source code.

Another common error with these files occurs when converting from .flv to another format, or vice versa. In most cases the codecs are not up to date, but sometimes the problem resides in the conversion software needing Adobe Flash Player installed on the machine. Users should consult the software documentation to diagnose this problem. It should also be noted that freeware or shareware conversion programs are known for being buggy and unreliable. Users who need reliable conversion should consider purchasing a commercial software product.
